Italy has two separate police forces, the Polizia di Stato (a non-military force) and the Carabinieri (fulfilling a double role as both military and judicial police). Either force may be called on when necessary, such as in the case of theft or other emergencies and problems.

The Polizia Stradale (tel. 577.777) is responsible for all matters concerning road traffic and circulation. Road accidents should be reported to them (or to the Polizia Municipale, * below) for assistance and for the necessary report.
In addition to these state forces, the Municipal Police (Polizia Municipale, also known as the Vigili Urbani) tel. 328.31, are not only responsible for traffic in the city, but also fulfil several other roles. One may refer to them formatters concerning prices and services.
