Address: Borgo Pinti, 58
This church and the Benedectine monastery connected with it,
were first built in the 13th century; the buildings were often
remodeled, especially between 1480 and 1492 by Giuliano da
Sangallo. Entrance to the church is through the Cappella del
Giglio, a 16th-century structure frescoed by Poccetti with scenes
from the Lives of SS. Nereo, Achilleo, Bernard and Filippo Neri,
and the annexed courtyard, with an Ionic portico, by Sangallo.
The interior of the church has a single aisle and six arches on
either side lead into the chapels which contain various
distinguished works of the 16th and 17th centuries. The Cappella
Maggiore has two canvases with Scenes from the Life of the
Magdalen by Luca Giordano, set below the dome frescoed by
Dandini.
The crypt at the back of the church leads to the Chapter Hall
which contains Perugino's fresco with Christ on the Cross and the
Magdalen, St. Bernard and St. Mary, John the Baptist and St.
Benedict.
