Begun in the 10th century in Romanesque style, S. Maria
Maggiore was almost completely rebuilt in Gothic style at the end
of the 13th century.
The linear severe facade has a lovely 14th-century Madonna of
Pisan school on the pointed arch portal. The interior, Cistercian
style, is extremely simple with three aisles with pointed arches
on square piers with dentilled cornices and square chapels.
Traces of 14th-century frescoes by Agnolo Daddi, Spinello
Aretino, Paolo Uccello and Masaccio are still to be found on some
of the piers.
The two episodes from the Story of King Herod, painted in the
style of Spinello Aretino in the Cappella Maggiore, are
particularly fine. In the left chapel is a relief in gilded wood
of a Madonna and Child, while in the right aisle is a notework
altar on wich is a painting of Santa Rita by the contemporary
artist Primo Conti.
