Around 20 km north of the Lake of Burano is the Oasis of the Orbetello Lagoon. Much wider than the previous, it includes an area open to visitors, with birdwatching facilities, and a completely protected area with access restricted only to researches and to the oasis's personnel. This territory is the only example of continental lagoon along the Italian Tyrrhenian coast.
The entire area is classified as highly important on an international level: its natural environment is very diverse and includes a saltwater lagoon with coastal stretches of salicornia weeds, a sandy coastal area, freshwater ponds, a section of dunes covered by Mediterranean shrub, pine forests, farmlands, small woods with cork trees, elm-trees and poplars.
